Organic Composting System

Crooked Creek Farm is honored to receive a grant from the C. Herbert and Anna E. Lutz Foundation to build an Organic Composting System that will benefit both the farm and the surrounding community.

Since 2008, Crooked Creek Farm has served as a welcoming place where horse lovers of all ages can safely learn, grow, and connect with horses. Beyond riding lessons and community events, the farm offers a work study program—an initiative designed to build responsibility, work ethic, and horsemanship skills. Through this program, riders participate in daily barn chores and hands-on horse care while earning credit toward lessons, trail rides, leases, or horse shows.

The new Organic Composting System will enhance these educational opportunities by giving work study students and staff a dedicated, organized area to manage horse manure while learning the fundamentals of composting and environmental stewardship. This system not only supports sustainable farm practices, but also creates a meaningful learning experience for participants.

Once the composting process is complete, the finished organic compost will be made available to the public. Community members will be able to conveniently drive onto the farm to pick up nutrient-rich compost for gardens, landscaping, and yards—turning a natural farm byproduct into a shared local resource.

Crooked Creek Farm is grateful to the C. Herbert and Anna E. Lutz Foundation for investing in a project that strengthens education, sustainability, and community connection.
